The HLA Group maintains a firm commitment to providing the best comprehensive healthcare with the most absolute respect for the environment. Therefore, the Group is based on the principle of precaution, analysing and managing its main environmental risks throughout its chain of values, considering both the direct impacts to the assets in which it runs its business, as well as the indirect impacts derived from said business. To do this, it has implemented an ISO 14001 Certified Environmental Management System which enables the impacts associated with its activity to be minimised.

The HLA Group’s focus on environmental management is based on its Environmental Quality, Excellence and Commitment Policy.

This policy serves as the basis for the company’s current Environmental Management System and it enables the control and minimisation of the main environmental aspects associated with the Group’s activity.

HLA has a corporate environmental department, a body which is responsible for ensuring compliance with the principles on which the policy is based and for guaranteeing the Group’s commitment to environmental protection. Furthermore, an environmental manager has been assigned in each hospital and they are responsible for guiding the Group’s environmental policy and management programmes in each of its assets, as well as for maintaining the Environmental Management System.

  • Environmental Management
A highlight of 2018 was the incorporation of all the medical centres into the system, which already included all the hospitals and clinics. 50 assets are now managed under the ISO 14001 certification umbrella, changing the number of certified assets from 15 in 2017 to 50 in 2018.
  • Sustainable management of medical waste
355 tonnes of medical waste managed in 2018.
  • Combined management of waste
In the first quarter of 2018, the last healthcare centres were incorporated into the framework contract for the management of medical waste. Additionally, in all centres in which a change of contract took place, training was given in advanced waste management.
  • Guide of Good Environmental Practice: Commitment to Sustainability
The HLA Group has created a Guide of Good Environmental Practice for application to its network of hospitals and clinics, with recommendations for both the Group’s employees and its patients and visitors during their stay in the healthcare centres.
